The nurse practitioner team at FamilyCare of Kent delivers the highest quality of care. We are all board-certified family nurse practitioners with decades of combined experience and thousands of happy patients. Our team includes nationally recognized clinicians, teachers, and speakers who serve on the clinical faculty for the University of Washington School of Nursing and Pacific Lutheran University School of Nursing.

Robert (Bob) T. Smithing, MSN, ARNP, FAANP

Robert T. Smithing, MSN, ARNP, FAANP

Bob Smithing has been a family nurse practitioner (FNP) since 1981. He has expertise with teenagers, women’s health, asthma treatment, and dermatology.

He holds a master of science in nursing (MSN) degree from the University of Pennsylvania and board certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a family nurse practitioner. He also studied nursing as an undergraduate student at State University of New York (SUNY) in Buffalo.

Bob has received many honors and awards for his leadership and contributions to the field of nursing in the past 30 years. He is a past president of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and served on the original board of the American College of Nurse Practitioners.

Bob is the recipient of the Sharp Cutting Edge Leadership Award – an award given once a year by the American College of Nurse Practitioners and bestowed upon an outstanding nurse who has demonstrated leadership above and beyond. He is also the recipient of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners’ Washington State Outstanding Nurse Practitioner award.

In addition, Bob is a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP), a prestigious honor held only by only 1 of 500 nurse practitioners in the United States. He was also mentioned in Seattle magazine's article "Top Doctors: The Super Nurse."

Bob has previously been on the editorial board of the Journal for Nurse Practitioners and Clinician Reviews and has been the co-editor of ARNP Care since 1989. He is founder of the website NPCentral.net.

Bob is a clinical faculty member for the University of Washington and Pacific Lutheran University, educating the next generation of family nurse practitioners. Several times a year, he can be found teaching classes on IUD placement, women’s health, suturing, biopsies, and dermatologic procedures.

Maddy Wiley cares for patients of all ages with all types of medical problems. She has an interest and special expertise in women’s health, asthma, allergies, and dermatology.

Maddy has been a family nurse practitioner since 1980. She earned a master of science in nursing (MSN) degree at the University of Pennsylvania and was subsequently certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a family nurse practitioner. Maddy is a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP), a prestigious honor held by only 1 in 500 nurse practitioners in the United States.

Kathy always wanted to be a nurse. She realized her dream and has been working in the nursing field since 1973. Most of Kathy’s experience has been in emergency medicine, but in 1998 she completed her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and became a board-certified family nurse practitioner. She has been in family practice ever since.

Family practice gives her the opportunity to care for individuals from all generations, from birth to grandparents. She enjoys getting to know her patients and their families, and she even cares for some four-generation families. Kathy believes that patients deserve the best care, need someone to listen attentively to their healthcare concerns, and should always be afforded the utmost respect. Her expertise includes diabetes, hypertension, and asthma treatment.

Kathy was trained at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona and she earned her nursing degrees (BSN and MSN) at Saint Martin’s College in Lacey, Washington. Her master’s thesis on studying the accuracy of ear thermometers in infants won the national Best Emergency Nursing Research Award in 1998.

Afton R. Williamson, DNP, ARNP

Afton Williamson has dedicated her career to being a nurse practitioner to serve families in Washington. She is passionate about primary healthcare and cares for patients of all ages using a holistic approach. She believes all people deserve respect and care from an attentive and open-minded provider.

Afton began her nursing career as a registered nurse (RN) at the Mayo Clinic, specializing in mood disorders. She was a school nurse for Seattle public schools, working with children from preschool through high school. She also has experience as a sexual assault nurse examiner at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, WA.

Afton received her doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree from the University of Washington and became a board-certified family nurse practitioner. She completed a large part of her nurse practitioner clinical training with FamilyCare of Kent. Her doctoral work focused on the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), a model for primary care delivery that strives to improve patient-centeredness within the healthcare system, and she continues her work with the PCMH at FamilyCare of Kent.

Susan Mitchell, DNP, ARNP

Susan Mitchell is passionate about primary care. She enjoys partnering with patients and families of all ages and all backgrounds to help achieve optimal health and wellness.

Susan began her career as a registered nurse (RN) in cardiology at Group Health. She has also worked at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle and has volunteered as a RN in Mozambique. She has extensive experience as a nurse practitioner in the prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS.

Susan received her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from the University of Washington School of Nursing and became a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner. Her clinical training included rotations in internal medicine, pediatrics, and emergency care as well as family practice.
