Wellness Exams & Physicals

Good health starts with an annual check-up

Wellness exams and physicals should be performed when you are healthy. We love taking care of you when you are ill, but we’d much prefer to see you in good health. At FamilyCare of Kent, Washington, our nurse practitioners perform nearly every kind of medical examination known to man and some known only to women.

Annual Wellness Exams

Wellness exams are performed at specific milestones during the first two years of life to ensure healthy growth and development. After that, you should schedule a wellness exam for yourself, your spouse, and your children once a year. Women should also schedule a well-woman visit once a year, which includes a pelvic exam and cervical cancer screening (Pap smear + HPV testing). Wellness exams are performed by primary care providers, like the FamilyCare of Kent nurse practitioners.

It’s best to schedule your annual exam around the same time each year. If you have health insurance, you are entitled to one physical per year with no copay. This is a benefit that you definitely should take advantage of, even if you are completely healthy. You want to stay healthy, right?

Preparing for Your Checkup

During your checkup, we will discuss any health concerns and goals for the next 12 months. Some people like to make a list of things to discuss. It’s also a good idea to quiz your parents and siblings about any health conditions they have dealt with. We’ll review your medical history, administer the appropriate vaccines or immunizations, and order the necessary tests.

Wellness exams are also used to check for signs of disease that you may be at-risk for based on your age, gender, personal and family medical history, lifestyle, and symptoms.

Be sure to let us know if you have experienced any of the following:

  • Significant weight gain or loss (or trouble gaining or losing weight)
  • Skin changes including rashes, infections, warts, moles, discoloration, bumps or lumps
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep, snoring, feeling tired all the time, or signs of sleep apnea
  • Shortness of breath, abnormal coughing, or wheezing
  • Heart palpitations
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Behavioral / mood changes
  • For women, abnormal periods or breast changes

Let us know if you have a personal or family history of chronic conditions, such as:

Sports Physicals

Sports physicals are generally required before your son or daughter can play organized sports, such as a football club, soccer team, swim team, or other team activity. The purpose is to make sure your child is healthy enough for physical activity.

We conduct sports physicals for all local school and club-based sports teams. We are happy to see any student residing in the Auburn, Federal Way, Highline, Kent, Renton, Tahoma, and Tukwila school districts. We are unable to see students from outside of these areas for sports physicals.

For your convenience, the necessary forms are available below for Auburn, Kent, and Tahoma.

Please remember to schedule your child’s physical early to beat the rush, which is typically late summer and early fall. If you are a member of our practice, we offer priority scheduling for sports physicals. We can also combine a sports physical with your child’s annual well visit to make it even more convenient.

We charge a minimal fee ($40) for sports physicals. They are not covered by insurance.

Please complete the form as much as possible prior to the exam.
