Well Woman Care – Kent, WABecause of the uniqueness of the female anatomy and its design to bear children, women often have special health needs. In addition, certain diseases and health conditions are unique to females.

Vaginal Infections & Discharge.

Vaginitis (infection of the vagina) is one of the most common gynecologic conditions we take care of in our office. The symptoms include abnormal discharge, vulvar or vaginal discomfort, or all three. A cervical inflammation called cervicitis may also cause a discharge.

Vaginal discharge is part of the body’s way of maintaining it's health. Normal discharge is usually clear or milky with no odor. A change in the amount, color, or smell, irritation, itching or burning could be symptoms of an infection.

The most common causes of vaginitis are bacterial vaginosis, yeast and trichomoniasis. Never-the-less many women with vaginitis may remain undiagnosed. Accurate diagnosis may be elusive, and care must be taken to distinguish these conditions from other infectious and noninfectious causes. Our nurse practitioners use multiple gynecology testing to identify the cause. We can test for causes related to the following diseases, infections or conditions: Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Bacterial Vaginosis, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Anogenital Warts, Cervical Cancer, Trichomonas vaginalis, Cervicitis, Vulvovaginal Candidiasis, Anogenital Herpes (Herpes simplex 1 and 2), Nongonoccocal Urethritis (NGU), Chancroid, Lymphogranuloma venereum (Chlamydia trachomatis L1, L2, L3), and Syphilis.

Treatment of vaginitis varies by cause and should be directed at the underlying cause.

Abnormal Pap Smears.

Abnormal Pap smears are a common problem in gynecology. Our nurse practitioners can use colposcopy and cervical biopsy to determine the degere of disease presence and the next step to be taken. Testing on Pap smear samples for the presence of multiple types of HPV can be done.

HPV & Genital Warts.

HPV or the human papilloma virus can infect the mouth, throat, cervix, vagina, vulva, anus and perianal areas. Our nurse practitioners use gynecologic colposcopy to magnify and evaluate potential sites for infection. Once identified the appropriate treatment can be selected and the patient treated.
