Teen Health

We care for teens and their families

Caring for teens requires a careful balance between meeting the needs of both teens and parents. At FamilyCare of Kent, our nurse practitioners are skilled in maintaining this balance. Starting at age 14, teens can request care for reproductive health issues such as birth control and STDs, as well as mental health care – all without parental notification. While we encourage teens to talk with their parents, we recognize this is not always possible or desirable and we will maintain our patients’ confidentiality.

Regular Checkups

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises teens should be checked once a year until age 21. In addition to regular checkups, school-aged children should be seen for problems such as:

  • Significant weight gain or loss
  • Rashes or skin infections
  • Sleep problems or changes in behavior
  • Breathing problems
  • Fever higher than 102 degrees
  • Frequent sore throats or earaches
