Regular checkups.
Teens should have regular checkups. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises teens should be checked once a year until age 21. In addition to regular checkups, school-aged children should be seen for problems such as:
- Significant weight gain or loss
- Rashes or skin infections
- Sleep problems or changes in behavior
- Breathing problems
- Fever higher than 102
- Frequent sore throats or earaches
Caring for teens requires a careful balance between meeting the needs of both parents and teens. Our nurse practitioners are skilled in mantaining this balance. Starting at age 14 teens can request care for reproductive health issues such as birth control, STD screening and treatment. They can also request mental health care. All of this without parental notification. While we encourage teens to talk with their parents we recognize this is not always possible or desirable and we will maintain our patient's confidentiality.
